Last month, for my youngest daughter’s third birthday, I decided to alleviate some of the stress of the food prep. For the first time in all my birthday party planning years, I ordered cookies! It is kind of a nerve wracking experience, ordering a food online. The timing has to be perfect in order for them to be fresh and arrive in time for the party. Then, there’s the taste. How can you know how good something is if you’ve never tasted it? Lastly, and possibly the most important, is the presentation. How can you be sure the cookies won’t all be a crumbled mess by the time they ship to your door? Even buying from a shop with great reviews can still leave you a little bit concerned. But from the very beginning of my conversations with Adrienne at Sugar Petals Cookiery, I knew I was in good hands. Her cookies are gorgeous, her presentation is perfect, and her customer service is absolutely stellar. She put my mind at ease immediately.

The cookies arrived in perfect time for the party, and…here’s the best part, they were the most delicious, the softest, the most perfect sugar cookies that have ever graced my lips. And y’all, I paid full price. I’m not getting paid to tell you this. They are really just that good.

So good, in fact, that she inspired me to recreate a calorie free version for my daughter’s little tea set!

Materials:
Yarn – Any weight yarn you’d like with the appropriate hook size! I have used worsted weight yarns with both E or F hooks, and super chunky Bernat Blanket yarn with a K hook. In worsted weight yarns, I found that Red Heart Super Saver Cornmeal, is the perfect color for the bottom part of the cookie.
Hook – Same as above! Use the appropriate hook with the appropriate weight yarn, for the tight stitching you need, and make your unicorn cookie a teeny token or a plushy stuffy!
Small amounts of polyester fiberfill for stuffing
Tapestry needle for sewing
Notes: This pattern can be made with different materials and different sized hooks, for a different size cookie, without changing the pattern at all! I did not list the specific yarns for this reason, because you can do whatever you’d like. I have made it with worsted weight yarns with an E or an F hook. I have also made it with super chunky Bernat Blanket yarn with a K hook. Have fun with it! Use lighter weight yarns and smaller hooks to make it keychain sized if you’d like! Text and images copyright ©2018 by Erin Greene of ekayg, all rights reserved. Leave a long tail for sewing, but don’t sew together yet. Continue with pattern.
Horn in yellow
Begin with magic ring.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts
Rnd 2: BLO (inc, sc in next 2 sts)2x; 8 sts
Rnd 3: BLO sc in each st around; 8 sts
Rnd 4: BLO (inc, sc in next 3 st)2x; 10 sts
Rnds 5-6: BLO sc in each st around; 10 sts
Do not stuff. Close horn with sc through the back loops of back to back sts. Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.
Sew the bottom of the horn in place on the center of the top of the cookie. Don’t fasten off the tail yet, because you will need it for sewing to the bottom of the cookie.

Continue with sewing on the eyes. Use black embroidery thread OR you can split a strand of yarn in half for thinner black yarn. If you’re making the larger stuffy, with the Bernat Blanket yarn, no need to split the yarn. Just use worsted weight yarn for the eyes.
For the eyes, follow the images here. I placed them around rows 8 and 9, across the span of 3 sts.

Bring the yarn back through, a row above the initial entry, and UNDER the yarn in front.

I then wrapped the yarn around it’s self, pulling tightly…

and put back through OVER the yarn into the sts above.

Pull tightly, and this will hold your yarn in place with a curve, with a very even and consistent look.

After the eyes, sew on the pinks of the ears by creating little triangles and then filling them in.

Leaves
Ch 5
Rnd 1: sl st into the 3rd ch from hook, sc in next ch, 3 sc in last ch, turn to work on the opposite side of the ch, sc in next ch, sl st in next ch, sl st to top to join, fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
sew the leaves above the eyes.

Flowers, make 3 in colors of your choice
Ch 9
Row 1: turn and inc in 2nd ch from hook, inc in each ch across; 16 sts
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Use the tail to sew the spiral into a flower, then sew onto the top of the cookie, below the horn.

You can connect your spiral together in one swoop with your needle, going through the outsides and the center. Then secure the rest as you sew it onto the top of the cookie.
Assembly
After sewing all the pieces to the front of the cookie, place your two pieces back to back. Sew around, st to st with your white loose end. I sewed the piece together with a st going over the top, white to tan, white to tan.

Once you’ve sewn all the way around, to the horn, stuff, and send your white yarn through to complete sewing around the other ear. Then, using your yellow tail, sew the horn to the back horn, stuffing as you go.

Fasten off, and weave in your end. Add a little blush with your own make up kit for the finishing touches!
Go enjoy your tea and cookies! 🙂
