Super Mario Mushroom Zipper Charm

My oldest child is turning 10 next week. 10! That’s like, a whole decade. That’s longer than my high school and college years combined. I can’t handle it. So instead of dwelling on how old that makes me, or how quickly time is flying by, I am pouring my efforts into his first ever, big birthday party.

Sure, he’s had parties before, but they mostly consisted of family, and they weren’t at any special location. This year he gets a whole theme, a special location, and a handful of friends he has made since entering school! He’s pretty excited about the whole thing. And I am in party planning overload!

These cute little mushrooms are the first of a few patterns I will be making for his party favors. He likes having little trinkets clipped to his backpack, but these can be made without the clasps as well!

Materials:
Worsted weight yarn in beige, green or red, white, and black
For the beige, I found that Vanna’s Choice, Beige, was perfect for that off white bottom of the mushroom!
Crochet hook, E – 3.5mm
Polyester Fiberfill
Yarn needle
*Optional: Plastic Lobster Clasp. You can make it just a soft mushroom toy, or add a clasp to turn your mushroom into a fun zipper charm!

Terms and abbreviations to know:
Magic ring
st, sts – stitch, stitches
sc – single crochet
inc – increase, work 2 sts into same st
BLO – back loop only
dec – decrease, work 2 sts together, making 1 st

Notes: The Super Mario mushroom is worked in the rnd, from the bottom up, with no joining. Eyes and mushroom spots are sewn into place. Finished item is approximately 1.25 inches tall. Mushroom

Begin with magic ring, in beige.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts
Rnd 2: inc in each st around; 12 sts
Rnd 3: BLO, sc in each st around; 12 sts
Rnds 4-5: sc in each st around; 12 sts
Attach red or green, and fasten off beige.
Rnd 6: (inc in next st, sc in next st)6x; 18 sts
Rnds 7-9: sc in each st around; 18 sts
Rnd 10: (dec, sc in next st)6x; 12 sts
Stop here to stitch on the eyes and the spots. The eyes are simply 2 lines, in black, covering the span of 2 rnds down. For the spots, make a square with the white, and then fill it in over and over, until no more red shows through that spot. I made 4 spots, evenly around, in rnd 8, approximately 3 sts apart.

Continue in your red or green.
Rnd 11: dec 6x around; 6 sts
Fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing. You can stop here, and just weave your tail around the hole to close, or weave around to close AND sew over the bottom of the clasp to attach.
