I wanted to make something soft and cuddly for my children’s Easter baskets this year, and this Puffy Stuffy Bunny came to mind. However, I also wanted to find a little reason behind it. You can read my little story below, or skip straight to the pattern, but I hope you enjoy it, either way!

Today is Good Friday. I can remember, as a child, asking my dad why it was called, good. It seemed like such a brutally sad day. Even as a young child, the heaviness of it weighed me down. My dad reminded me of why it is good. That sacrifice, that brutal day, made it possible for us to go to Heaven. It made it possible for us to be cleansed of all our sins, and all our mistakes.

There are no stories in the Bible about bunnies, but I do find it interesting that the Easter Bunny is largely depicted as white, and upon a little research, I discovered that the hare was symbolic of life, death, and rebirth in some ancient pagan cultures. Many would disagree, but in my mind, the white bunny is symbolic of the death and resurrection of Christ and the new life He gives.

“‘Come now, let us reason together’, says the Lord, ‘Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.'” ~Isaiah 1:18

I hope you enjoy the second pattern in my Puffy Stuffy series, regardless of your own beliefs. This Puffy Stuffy Bunny is super soft and works up very quickly! I know Easter is only 2 days away, but I’m sure you could make several of these sweet, floppy eared bunnies before then!

Have a blessed weekend!

Notes: The Puffy Stuffy Bunny pattern is worked in a round from the top, down, with no joining. Use a st marker to mark each rnd. The body, arms, and legs are made all in one piece. The ears and tail are made separately and sewn on. This yarn can be tricky to work with, so here are some tips: to be sure you’re not missing any sts, always count each rnd, until you’re more comfortable. Because the yarn is so thick, the sts will be very close together, especially during the increasing rnds. Do NOT pull yarn too tightly while sewing or closing, because it can break. Pull gently. This pattern is available for free on my blog here, but if you wish to download a PDF copy and avoid the ads, it can be found in my Ravelry shop for a small fee.

Puffy Stuffy Bunny

Body:

Begin with magic ring.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts
Rnd 2:  inc in each st around; 12 sts
Rnd 3: inc in each st around; 24 sts

What it looks like after rnd 2. The increasing rnds are themost difficult to work, but look for the 2 fuzzy loops at the top of each st, and you’ll find your working st.

This is what it looks like when you go through the st. You can see the outline here of 2 different fuzzy loops over the hook.

This is after rnd 3. Be sure to count each st so as not to skip any. p.s. how much do you love that chocolate bunny stitch marker from HarperBabyShop? Click on the image to go to her Etsy page!
Rnd 4 (inc, sc in next 3 sts) 6x; 30 sts
Rnd 5-11: sc in each st around; 30 sts
Rnd 12: sc in next 3 sts, dc bobble, sc in next 8 sts, dc bobble, sc in next 17 sts; 30 sts

The dc bobble is just a series of double crochets, without completing the final step until the end, so they each remain on the hook until you pull all the way through. This is after the first one is made. Leave those loops on the hook to begin the next.

This is after adding the second dc of the bobble. Leave these loops on the hook and begin the next.

This is after adding the third partial dc. Leave all 4 loops on the hook and begin the next.

After completing the 4 partial dc sts, yarn over and pull through ALL 5 loops on the hook to make one big st.

Rnds 13-14: sc in each st around; 30 sts
Rnd 15: (dc bobble, sc in next 14 sts) 2x; 30 sts
Before continuing on to close, stitch the nose and eyes to the face.

For the nose, pull pink through between rnds 12 and 13.

Go up 1 st, and over it twice to make a line under the nose. Than begin making a triangle for the nose.

Continue outlining your triangle nose, and then fill it in.

Once you have the triangle outline, just fill it in by going down to the point, and back, working your way across the top.

To make the eyes, pull black yarn through, between rnds 7 and 8, above the arm. Then pull back through in same rnd, 3 sts above that side of the nose.

Pull the yarn back through, 1 rnd below and through the eyelid to hold it in place.

Pull yarn back through, up a rnd and diagonally through the eyelid to make the second eyelid.

After completing the lashes on the first eye, pull black through 3 rnds above the other side of the nose, and repeat for second eye.

Completed eyes and nose.
Begin stuffing. Body will stretch as you stuff, so stuff a little more after each rnd here, before closing.
Rnd 16: (invsc2tog, sc in next 3 sts) 6x; 24 sts
Rnd 17: invsc2tog 6x; 12 sts
Rnd 18: invsc2tog 6x; 6 sts
Complete stuffing, if you can put anymore through the middle.
Fasten off and weave the end around the hole to close.
Ears:
Begin with magic ring.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts
Rnd 2: (inc, sc in next st) 3x; 9 sts
Rnd 3: sc in each st around; 9 sts
Rnd 4: (inc, sc in next 2 st) 3x; 12 sts
Rnds 5-12: sc in each st around; 12 sts
Rnd 13: (invsc2tog, sc in next 2 sts) 3x; 9 sts
Rnds 14-17: sc in each st around; 9 sts
Fold closed and sc through both side to close up. Leave long tail for sewing onto the head.

This is the closed end of the ear, after working sc through both sides of the fold to close.

Pin the ears in place on the top of the head, so they’re hanging down just behind the arms.

This is optional, depending on the look you want. You can sew the ear to the body, by going back and forth between the side of the body, and the underside of the ear, working down toward the leg.

Sew horizontally through the ear and the body, all the way down, until the end of the ear curls up by the leg.
Tail:
Begin with magic ring.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts
Rnd 2: inc in each st around; 12 sts
Rnd 3: (inc, sc in next st) 6x; 18 sts
Rnds 4-5: sc in each st around; 18 st
Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing. Sew tail onto the back of the bunny, stuffing gently as you sew in place.

  1. Thanks for this cute free pattern! Love it! Any suggestions on attaching ears, etc. as I don’t think I am very good at it! (Usually the reason I don’t make little critters, dolls, etc.!)
Blessings for your Good Friday and Easter Sunday!

    • Hi Helen! Thank you for your comment!
I attach them pretty simply. I pin them in place, and put the needle first through a st on the head, in line with where I want the ear to be placed. Then I go through the st at the end of the ear, and back into the head. And repeat that ear to head, ear to head, across until the top of the ear is secured. Then, to get it to stay on the sides, I sew underneath the ear too, from the underside of the ear, to the body, and so on and so forth, all the way down to the bottom leg. It’s hard to put into words, and maybe my photos aren’t too clear, but there are a few photos with captions at the end of the pattern, to describe this process. I hope this is helpful!
